Boss - The Leading Provider of Mechanical Control of Salt Cedar and Russian Olive Trees

" Proper root crown extraction is proving to be the most effective way to control salt cedar and Russian olive trees, in terms of cost and results, even when compared to the aerial application of herbicide using helicopters. Have doubts? We encourage you to call for a list of our client references and talk to them directly."

Rick Evans

In 2001 Boss Reclamation pioneered a root crown extraction process using excavators equipped with specially designed tree extraction tools. Since that time, the Boss root crown extraction process has proven to be the most effective way to control salt cedar and Russian trees, in terms of cost and results. That’s right, even when compared to applying arsenal with helicopters, the Boss root crown extraction process is more cost effective, provides immediate recovery of water resources, and does not involve the use large volumes of herbicide (that have serious environmental impacts).

Over the past five years Boss has successfully treated thousands of acres of salt cedar and Russian olive in New Mexico and Texas on the Rio Grande River, the Pecos River, the Chama River, and Lake Meredith National Wildlife Refuge. Our work has been studied and documented by our clients and independent sources that will confirm that our root crown extraction process is consistently achieving over 90% mortality in salt cedar and Russian olive trees upon initial extraction.

Does that mean that Boss has found a one shot “silver bullet” to kill salt cedar and Russian olive? Absolutely not! But we have developed a process that reduces salt cedar and Russian olive to manageable levels at the lowest possible cost, using the following steps:

1. Extract and pile (for future control burning), or extract and mulch, live salt cedar and Russian olive trees. At this point, over 90% of the trees are dead and the water they were using daily is reclaimed.

2. At the end of the first growing season after initial extraction, treat the 10% re-sprouts with 1) a low volume, low cost application of herbicide using back pack sprayers OR 2) a secondary extraction process. Note: The reason this will work is that the post extraction re-sprouts are growing off small, broken lateral roots (not a massive root crown) and are very vulnerable to a low volume application of herbicide or secondary extraction at that time.

3. At that point, total control will be approached (95 - 98% tree mortality), notwithstanding “new growth from seeds in the ground” that may have occurred between the time of original extraction and the treatment of re-sprouts.

Bottom line is that if you look at all the current practices to control salt cedar and Russian olive, from initial treatment through the rehabilitation process, you will find that proper root crown extraction gives the best results at the lowest cost.
