Proper root crown extraction is a very surgical process in which excavators literally pull trees, and their entire tap root systems, out of the ground without 1) breaking the tree above ground or 2) breaking the root system away from the tree trunk below ground. Extracted trees and their entire root crowns are lifted straight up out of the ground, shaken to remove excess dirt from the root ball, and strategically placed into piles or windrows for future burning or grinding. Large divots are then partly backfilled by a secondary swipe with the extraction tool. Small divots are not treated.
Root Crown Extraction
with Grinding as a Salt Cedar In areas where control burning of slash is not possible, grinding is required to compliment the extraction process. In all grinding areas care must be taken to keep the grinding surface as level as possible. Otherwise, the grinders can “bury” extracted trees and limbs during the grinding process, which will cause many of the buried trees and limbs to re-sprout at a later time. It should be noted that divots using the Boss tree extraction tool (with its open back design) are smaller than those created by modified excavator buckets (with a closed back design) that are often used by others to extract trees. Use of the Boss tree extraction tool therefore allows Boss operators to minimize surface disturbance which in turn facilitates more thorough grinding of extracted trees, which in turn reduces the amount of re-growth that will occur as the result of the overall process. Note: Verification of this can be obtained by talking with our client references.
Experienced Operators and the Right Equipment What sets the Boss extraction process apart from others that use excavators to extract trees is our innovative, open backed tree extraction tools. These unique tools are of an open back design (to prevent underground root severing) and are installed on all of our 228 Komatsu, zero tail swing excavators. Boss excavators, with their powerful and sophisticated system of hydraulics and a computer driven power trains, can work at grades of up to 50%, in standing water up to 3 feet deep, and in any area that can be accessed by the tracks (due to the zero tail swing feature). The machines have a 28-foot boom reach and clear a path that is almost 50 feet wide with one pass over the land. And, they can reach down into places and remove trees that can only be accessed by an excavator boom. Surface disturbance and damage to native grasses is minimal, compared to other mechanical processes, as all Boss excavators have ground pressures of less than 6 psi. Boss operators
literally have thousands of hours of experience extracting trees in all
types of river, range, and forest environments. Their experience will
make a difference in the outcome of your project. |
